Paris, 23rd – 25th April 2019: The Levy Mwanawasa Regional Centre (LMRC) participated in the 13th Annual Forum on Responsible Mineral Supply Chains held by the International Conference on the Great Lakes Region Secretariat (ICGLR), the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), and the United Nations Group of Experts on the DRC (UN GoE) from 23rd – 25th April 2019 in Paris, France. The Forum was preceded by an event jointly organised with the World Bank on artisanal and small-scale mining on 26th April 2019.
The main objective of the Forum was to review and discuss implementation of the OECD Due Diligence Guidance for Responsible Supply Chains of Minerals from Conflict-Affected and High-Risk Areas and other initiatives to enable responsible mineral production and sourcing. It featured sessions on measuring impact and driving change, opportunities and challenges related to specifically diamonds, base metals, cobalt, 3Ts and gold, and regulatory and policy updates related to responsible sourcing.
The Forum brought together representatives from ICGLR, OECD and UN GoE as well as partner countries, international organisations, industry organisations, mining companies, mineral traders and exporters, smelters and processors, downstream companies active in the minerals supply chain, civil society organisations and other experts that participated in the Forum.
At the end of the Forum, countries presented on on-going efforts to ensure widest possible implementation of the Guidance in and from their jurisdictions, with a special focus on policies to promote integration of the 5 Step Framework into company practices.
