Geneva, 27th – 28th February 2019: The Levy Mwanawasa Regional Centre (LMRC) of the International Conference on the Great Lakes Region (ICGLR) participated in the Great Lakes Stakeholders and Experts Retreat in Geneva, Switzerland, from 27th – 28th February 2019. The retreat was organised by Swiss Federal Department of Foreign Affairs and the United Nations Secretary-General Special Envoy to the Great Lakes Region of Africa and in partnership with the Conflict Prevention and Peace Forum (CPPF).
The objectives of the meeting were:
- To take stock and review a shared analysis of peace and security trends in the Great Lakes Region, including the regional implications of recent developments in the core countries.
- To review the role played by private sector actors and civil society in conflict prevention, stabilization and peacebuilding in the Great Lakes Region, and identify options to maximize their positive impact.
- To seek regional stakeholders’ views on options to address underlying causes of conflict, including measures to support and strengthen existing regional, bi-lateral, and tri-partite instruments for cooperation in the Great Lakes Region.
The meeting brought together scholars and expert, practitioners, regional stakeholders, and international decision-makers representing regional and international institutions.
At the end of the retreat, the key priorities were reviewed which international partners should focus on to advance peace and security in the Great Lakes Region.
