Meeting to enhance coordination, coherence, and complementarity of mediation efforts between the AU and RECs/RMs

Addis Ababa, 18th – 20th September 2019: The International Conference on the Great Lake Region (ICGLR)’s Levy Mwanawasa Regional Centre for Democracy and Good Governance (LMRC) participated in the meeting of the African Union (AU), Economic Communities (RECs) and Regional Mechanisms (RMs) in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia from 18th – 20th September 2019.

The objective of the meeting was to formally introduce the RECs/RMs to the African Union Mediation Support Unit (AU- MSU) within the broader context of the African Peace and Security Architecture (APSA) in order to enhance joint capacities and ultimately, collaboration in continental conflict prevention and mediation efforts.

The meeting brought together representatives from the RECs/RMs, AU Liaison Officers to the RECs, Heads of RECs/RMs Liaison Offices to the AUC, staff of the AU Commission, and Mediation Experts from the United Nations Mediation Support Unit (UN- MSU) as well as the UN Standby Team.

The outcome of the meeting was common understanding of the institutional mediation mechanisms, mandate and activities of the AU and RECs/RMs, synergies, gaps and potential areas for collaboration as well as requiring support or strengthening are identified for collaborative programming and inputs to draft AU-MSU Strategic Plan 2019-2021 solicited from RECs/RMs.
