Bujumbura, 29th – 31st January, 2019: The International Conference on the Great Lakes Region (ICGLR), in partnership with the European Union (EU), the Federal Republic of Germany and the Office of the United Nations Special Envoy of the Secretary General for the Great Lakes (O/SESG-GL) facilitated a 2-day Planning Workshop for Peace and Security Programme from 29th – 31st January, 2019 in Bujumbura, Burundi.
The workshop brought together all the relevant stakeholders involved in the implementation of Regional Project on Peace and Security in the Great Lakes Region. These include the ICGLR and its regional structures i.e. the ICGLR Regional Training Facility (RTF), the Levy Mwanawasa Lusaka Center, the Kinshasa Center and the Goma Centers i.e. Expanded Joint Verification Mechanism (EJVM) and Joint Intelligence Fusion Centre (JIFC), ICGLR Women’s and Youth Fora, the United Nations i.e. the O-SESG-GL, the UNDP, the UNFPA and the UN Women,African Union Liaison Office for Burundi and the Great Lakes and GIZ.
The objectives of the workshop was to develop an overview and increase understanding of the overall peace and security situation in the Great Lakes Region, to define ICGLR’s added value in the conflict resolution framework as well as define the strategic and operational plan of the project.
The planning workshop reviewed a global strategic plan for 2019-2021 and a detailed budgeted operational action plan for 2019.
